SpanglishA Poem by Ashley AcriAs a young woman learning a second language, I wanted a new way to integrate my second language into my first one. And now we have Spanglish.Me llamo Ashley and I am una estudiante of Spanish Yo hablo two languages and muchas personas son surprised que
I speak Español. You call me una gringa pero soy much more. Su mente es small, but you expect me mente es grande. My world is limited solamente por mi lengua. And mi corazón no tiene a limit on the love it can contain. Love por un
lengua, por las personas que hablan this second language of mine, por su
cultura. My friends and family no entienden mi razón and neither do
you. You call me ignorante, y dime que soy una racist because of “cultural
appropriation” When quiero
mostrarte cuánto amo y respeto su idioma y su hogar y su cultura. My mother
tells me “Estamos en América y mejor había hablar a Ingles en público.” My father
tells me he is en el temor de lo que puedo hacer con mís dos lenguas. But how do I feel? Estoy ni aquí ni allá I’m an outsider in dos idiomas. Mi piel es más blanca than the skin of somebody who should
speak Spanish. Mi pelo es
demasiado recta to come from the islands. I speak
like una Domincana, but soy Polanca. My home is
in Los Estados Unidos but my heart is in Barcelona, y Puerto Rico, Y la
Republica Dominicana. My head speaks English pero mi corazón hable Español. My life ha convertido en Spanglish… Incomprendida por todos when I just wanted to be aceptada
por ambos. Spanglish is no way to live. © 2016 Ashley Acri |
