Life-Long Ferment

Spring spoke by rain patter

curving flower stalks grew firm

yielded and surrounded us

our toes dug in

our lips we bit

She surfed to Earth

on velvet jets of waves.

Holding hands we went to class

no one should see the embrace

yet the knowledge was sheer

That was when Evelyn looked

mesmerizing like an optical illusion

difficult to put down on paper

elusive to hold

and neither could she hold

The ox without his burden

goes lowing in the sun

I've seen her lately

no less perfect

her hair with a million shocks

of frizz from surfing

her nose a greater glory

brainy vine hidden willow

she looks like the one forever love

finally splits my last breath

She cannot be drawn by me

a rainbow removing a heart by surgery

fruit sweetens dreaming in the sun

the ox goes lowing with no burden

her bells are made for Thee
