Mia Hidalgo

Auburn has been missing for exactly two months now, and i’ve been receiving these phone calls from a guy giving off clues that are telling me something, but they don’t make any sense. Could he be trying to mislead me?

His voice sounds familiar, Its kind of dark and raspy, gives me chills, And he sounds anxious and tired, like he’s scared something bad will happen.

The way he speaks reminds me of the way my mother spoke to me frantically over the phone when my sister ended up in the hospital. She died six days later on her birthday.

My phone starts to ring, and I jump, pulling it from my pocket. It’s him again. I consider not answering and just letting it ring, but I press “Answer” on the last ring.

“Hello.” I Speak harshly, and a sinister laugh comes from tge other end.

“well hello ‘again’, Ms. Hidalgo.” An unrecognizable voice counters with fake pity. “As you know,” the voice continues, “I have your friend. But don’t worry, she’s okay, she’s not hurt or anything.” He finishes.

“What do you want!?” I plead, anxiety and fear and anger bubbling beneath the surface.

“Well,” He starts, “I wanted money, but now” He says, a change in his voice, as if he feels remorse. “But now i want her” He explains, causing my heart to freeze.

“Why?” I wonder aloud, and a sad-ish laugh comes from him.

“Well,” He starts, “I’ve taken a liking to her.” He admits, and then I hear her in the background.

“Hey, I didn’t know you had a cat!” She exclaims softly and excitedly.

“Yeah, Thats Ringo.” He responds, letting out a light laugh before bringing his attention back to me. “Listen,” He says, “I’m not holding her against her will anymore.” He admits sheepishly.

“Why not?” I ask, suddenly very curious.

“I don’t want to anymore, Besides,” He says, “It wasn’t and isn’t my intention to hurt her.” He admits once more.

“Oh,” I whisper. “So then, why’d you want money?” I wonder.

“It’s for my dog…” He responds sadly.

“I’m sorry, How much do you need?” I ask.

“Oh no. No it’s okay, you don’y hav-” He tries but I cut him off.

“It’s okay, How much?” I ask again and I hear him let out a shaky breath.

“Six grand…” He whispers sadly.

“I’ll get it for you, and, just take care of my best friend. Tell her I love her.” I say.

“Thank you, and I will.” He responds and then I hang up.
