Chapter II

Flossie opened slowly her eyes just like when you’re seeing a dream and you do not yet want to wake up. The reality struck her as harsh that she burst into tears. Michael’s words were vivid in her mind. He had told her what to do. With resolute expression on her face Flossie donned a suit that was intended for difficult terrain and climate conditions. The suit was made entirely of special brown fabric and partly of leather (the fabric was invented after rain had decrease and the earth dried out vast sandy land). She bound up her hair in a ponytail. Then she packed her bag, including a gas mask, a bottle of water, food bars, a little shovel, a robe, a pocket knife, a compass, an emergency signal device and a first aid rescue package. All this she kept under her bed. The morning was already well advanced, although you could not know that otherwise than by looking at the clock. It was five over ten. Flossie decided to go secretly because she did not want her parents to try to prevent her. Megan had received a couple of days’ recovery time so she was still sleeping on the bed. But she did not suspect that Stuart was still in the kitchen. So Flossie almost collided with his father because she tried to move quietly so that she would not wake Megan. Stuart smiled and laid hold of Flossie so that she would not fell to the ground. ‘Flossie, sweetheart you did sleep late in this morning. Are you going to somewhere? Perhaps you will take some breakfast before that?’ Flossie hesitated for a moment but then sat down for a moment at the table. ‘Thanks dad, I would love to.’ Stuart almost got to pour her a substitute for tea, but then Flossie said; ‘Dad, could I get some substitute for coffee this morning?’ Stuart smiled. ‘Of course, sweetheart.’ Soon Flossie was holding the red and scuffed mug between her hands and wondered what would dare to tell him. In the end Flossie decided to tell ‘a shorter version of the truth’ because she appreciated her father. Flossie looked at Stuart straight into his eyes and said firmly; ‘Dad, I am going to save the planet.’

Stuart looked closely at his dear daughter, his only child, and tried to see what had caused this change in her. But it was a good change. It appeared that Flossie had not increased only in length but in years that she had yet to come. Stuart stood up and hugged his daughter and said; ‘I know it, sweetheart. And I am proud of you, it does not matter what you do.’ Flossie smiled. ‘Thanks dad.’ As soon as she had gone, Stuart sank back into a chair as if it would have drained all the life force out of him. Stuart leaned his face on his hands and for the third time in his life (but not the last time), he cried out loud. Because he had not dared to tell his daughter that her mother was seriously ill. He knew she was. Last night he had woken up in the middle of the night to find that his wife was coughing blood. She had something wrong with her lungs. Finally Stuart stood up and he was bowed down like an old man. Then he cleaned up the traces, and made a call and asked for a doctor to visit. After that he went to be with his dear wife.

Meanwhile in the “restricted area”

Flossie was walking as if she were still in a dream that she saw last night. She knew what she needed to do even if it cost her everything. Her earlier light steps felt again as heavy as the attraction would pull her to the ground. To live or to die. The words echoed in her mind with every step. She remembered Michael’s last words to her before she woke up.

‘Beautiful Flora, you are the Chosen One. Precious Rosalind, you’re the Princess of the Flowers. Beloved Violet, you’re the daughter of the Earth. The Almighty told me to tell you what to do so that you can bring the former glory of Garden’s of the Earth back. Listen carefully. ‘

Flossie had been traveling a long time, and looking at her wristwatch she noticed that it was almost three o’clock. She fell on the sand, exhausted. The journey had taken longer than she had expected. Flossie stood up and examined her backpack. She had water still half remaining and two food bars. The wind began to rise and it swept mercilessly over the sand dunes. It howled cheerless and Flossie sank again into the sand because of her sudden tired limbs and her throat felt dried up. ‘I must keep going’, she mumbled herself in a half-sleep. ‘…must…keep…going…’.

‘You must keep going. No matter of what is happening.’ Michael was speaking again to her. ‘Choose a route which departs from your home towards the West. Walk straight, do not turn. After a couple of hours’ journey you’ll reach the large, dried river bed. From there it is under an hour's journey, straight ahead, to the Hill of the Great Oak. Dig the roots of the tree until you find the hidden box with beautiful decorative patterns.’

Flossie turned to look at the big Oak tree on the hill. Michael smiled at her. ‘Yes, you’re looking at it, the Tree of Life.’

Suddenly Flossie woke up as somebody was shaking her on the shoulders. For a moment she did not knew where she was. Then she noticed the young faces that were looking at her concerned expression in the eyes. ‘Hey, are you okay?’ he said. ‘Yes, I must have fallen asleep’, Flossie said. The boy stood up and shook his head. ‘Oh man, I really thought that you were dead. That I was walking along here where no one dares to come and all of a sudden I almost tripped over the girl who is lying on the ground as if she were dead.’ The boy took a small bottle from his waist bag and handed it to her. ‘Here, take this. It will give you your strength back.’ When Flossie hesitated the boy smiled at her. ‘Go on, it is not poisoned if you’re thinking of that.’ To show that he spoke the truth, he took the first sip of the drink. Flossie felt that she could trust this fellow. She took the bottle and drank a very small sip of it, only to moisten her lips. It had mellow and strong taste, and it warmed her throat. Flossie drank more and felt how the heat and strength flowed back to her limbs. She handed the bottle back to him. ‘Thanks, what it is?’ He grinned. ‘Oh it is one vintage drinkable that I found some time ago’. Flossie looked at him. He was nice-looking fellow with blue eyes and blond, curly hair. ‘Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. When you’re living alone, and never see a single living soul, it tends to forget the good manners.’ The boy stretched out his hand with a smile. ‘It is nice to meet you. You are truly an unexpected as flower in the desert. My name is Michael, but you can call me Mike.’

Suddenly Flossie bursts out laughing. The tears were running down her cheeks. Mike looked at her with inquiring look on his face. ‘Err " did I say something amusing?’ He stroked his hair nervously and changed the weight from one foot to the other. ‘No " no! It was just…’ Flossie said and wiped tears. Flossie smiled at him and said with emphasizing on his name; ‘It is truly a very nice to meet you, Michael. My name is Flossie.’ Mike was looking at this girl, standing in front of him as the long-lost desert rose. She had the most beautiful reddish hair that he had ever seen. Flossie’s hair was wide open as her ponytail was loosened. He started talking more to himself than to her. ‘Flossie, it must be a shortened from…’, but Flossie responsible before he could end of his sentence. ‘It is a nickname, given by my mother, from Flora.’ Mike smiled at her. ‘Flora, it is a beautiful name.’ He discovered how unusual colored eyes this girl had. But suddenly Flossie remembered the purpose of her trip and took her backpack. ‘I’m sorry, but I have to rush. I try to find the Hill of the Great Oak.’ Mike smile wide. ‘Oh I know that place. It is not far from here were we are now.’ Flossie was happy because she had a companion on her journey.

‘But the journey which you must take, it will be your last one in this old World that makes a quiet death. Are you willing to do it?’

The Angel Michael’s words made Flossie tremble all over.  Suddenly she felt how her heart sank. Flossie was in her thoughts. Soon they will find my note, dad and mom. And then it is too late.

Dear dad and mom,

When you’re reading this, I’ll be far away and never return. Dad, as I said I’m going to save the planet. You perhaps thought that I was only joking and was not serious. But do not worry. Truly I’m going to be my father’s daughter, and bring the old world back. Mom, do not cry for me. I love you and dad so much. Be proud of me. I will be there with you, in spirit, to see the whole new world.

Someday we’ll be together again, as a family.

Be well, and so I bid thee farewell!

Your loving daughter,

Flossie

Postscript

“I wrote this very powerful story in part because of that I am worried about the current state of the world and the fact that natural resources are used recklessly and forests are being cleared down. Keep my story in your mind and when you walk in the outdoors, I hope that my story reminds you that this blue and green jewel, which is known as Earth, is the most valuable thing we have.

Take care of it.

And if the story has influenced you, hopefully in a good way, then my work was not in vain.”
