Autumn LeavesA Poem by Arthur GordonA simple poem about autumn AUTUMN
LEAVES by Arthur Gordon ‘The
winter solstice has began, It
is a time on the farm for hearty work and toil, The
tractor and plough take to the land, To
plough and prepare the rich, red soil. On
the flat plain of the Exe valley, Winter
wheat and barley are sown, Crows
gather to feast on the planted seed, In
spring the grain will be ripe and fully grown. Wintry
rain scours the bare ploughed land, Fallen
dry leaves turn and tap the ground, Dusk
soon ends the overcast short days, The
nocturnal call of a nightjar the only sound. In
the nearby villages and towns, In
the cheerless grey and coming of the night, The
birds roost early in the trees, Street
lamps come on at dusk, yellow and bright. Boats
head for the safety of the harbour, With
the onset of autumn rain and gales, Mariners
come ashore to a welcome inn, Yachtsmen
moor their boats and furl their sails. The
West country rivers swell with wintry rain,
The flowers will bloom in spring again, On the seashore the wind rises and the waters
seethe, This is the season of autumn leaves.’ ---------
