The Meeting

The human-size hearts were standing in the desert in closely spaced rows and he reached number 289, where a man was waiting. "I'm looking for love," said the man who'd come walking by, "but I will find a devil. I've stuck my arm into 289 hearts now, and every time – after a short search – I've pulled out a devil." "Yes," said the man who was waiting. "You're making a mistake by sticking your whole arm into the heart, where finding the devil is the easiest. Have you tried looking for love, by any chance? This you could do, for you needn't pull out the devil this time."

"Is he here, then?" asked the man.
