As You Stand Atop the World

As You Stand Atop the World

A Poem by Aries

Before decending into the murky black
Remember, once crossing the gilded gateways, there is no ‘turning back’

As you stand atop the world, feel the cold steel through your numb toes
Trapped in a snowflake storm, the world becomes a spiraling snowglobe
Inside there’s nothing left, only an empty void and the indent of what once remained

Back to a time where life was composed of light and you lived in eternal summer and bliss
But soon, the clouds rolled in, sweeping over your hills and meadows, swallowing your world in a single swipe.

When you were barraged by the cannons from every side, each one loaded with so much hate and spite
When you’re just not normal enough
Your colors are wrong
Your clothes are wrong
Your identity is wrong
Your love is wrong
You are wrong

It can be corrected, they say, with pills and drugs and discipilne and camps
Nothing but a pesky virus that can simply be ‘cured’
It’s not a part of you, they say, not ‘the real you’

And so you stand atop the world, gazing below at the fate that waits you, trapped in that snowglobe storm with the feeling of frosty girders beneath your feet
But please, please, before you leap
Think
That maybe, just maybe there are others.
Others who care
Who understand
Who love you

The world needs you,
Wonderful, amazing, perfect, flawed and flawless you
Because without you, the world is missing a piece of the puzzle, your piece of the puzzle
No matter how small you may feel, an ant beneath the boot of the world, remember my words
I care
More than I can ever say
Not in one poem, nor in a thousand
But i’ll try
For you
