The Rose That Fell From Grace

Got inspired a bit by Eminem's song Stan.

I look at you with sadness

As you lay there dead on the ground

And I keep thinking just what kind of madness

Could kill a beauty so profound.

 

I looked up to you like a role model

You helped me change my life

I even stopped picking up the bottle

You made me believe that I could strive,

 

That I could strive to become better

That with goals I could change completely

I never thought that you would ever

Have an effect on my life so deeply.

 

You told me that I could do it

And you encouraged me along the way

You inspired me to never quit

And form my goals to never stray.

 

What happened here? I wonder

How is it that I was able to rise?

And you went crashing with thunder

Ultimately meeting your demise.

 

I look at you with sadness

And tears start rolling down my face

That the light which shined through the darkness

Revealed that I was the rose that fell from grace.

This is possibly one of the most well written ways I have ever come across to describe the sadness and confusion that one feels when faced with such a dark moment. The sadness in this poem just bled out of every word, and is a very relatable read for many people. Was this written from a personal experience? If it was, then I'm very sorry to hear that you had to go through such a loss. :)

I wrote it from several experiences from the perspectives of people who I knew back in high school who I looked up to. Then at the 10 year reunion, those people are just the complete opposite of what they were. Eminem's song just really reminded of that.

This is kind of true in real life to unfortunately. The people I looked up to in middle and high school, I don't even recognize them anymore because they fell so bad from grace.

I remember the first time I heard the long version of Stan, I was shocked by the ending. A good kind of shocked. Eminem may be psychotic in his songs (I like to look at him as the "Scarface" of hip-hop music) but he is a storyteller.
