Ambrose Clues-Up Augustine

Ambrose Clues-Up Augustine

A Poem by Arezzo

So, when in Rome, do like the Romans.

There really isn’t much to learn:

they’re Archie Bunkers, Willy Lomans:

just go to church -- and earn, earn, earn.

Show up for dinner, when you’re bidden.

Endure their daughters, bear their jokes.

Have vices, sure, but keep them hidden,

and you can have Dumbarton Oaks.

The whole thing’s imitating Greece:

the central heating, law courts, drains:

they hold assemblies, hire police:

the whole bang shoot, without the brains.

Don’t condescend, or play the snob:

cash registers will do that job.
