Riverine Farewell

Riverine Farewell

A Poem by Archishman Rick

With a fading sunset by the banks of the Rhine,
I watched the final cruise sail off for the day,
From where I thought would have made a fine spot to dine,
Till the hour called on to depart for my way.

I reckoned her flowing pith leaves much to discern,
For a hermit spirit with ascension to learn,
To smile and arise from material defeat,
And face the distant road still left to complete.

My musing was nourished in golden afterglow,
Post melancholy in the twilight of trust,
The elemental word that these banks let me know,
I said back as a heartfelt farewell robust.

I don't know why but I am reminded of Hausman with this. And he is one of my favourite poets. The rhyme the structure all complete in a lovely lilting almost song. That carries the subject through from obscurity to empathy.

A cruise and a sunset seem to go together, even before any other sights are seen. I have always struggled to notice much of anything on boats, as like a child, I am drawn to the back of the boat and my imagination is set on overload, as I watch the boat cutting a path of white through the sea, hoping that two paths don't cross and we all fall into whatever is under the sea, which to me is unknown as I don't remember imagination being a big part of education in my day, other than the scary adventure books of things like the kraken and giant slither monsters. I do remember worrying that they would escape through the cuts the boats made, which is probably why I was sat glued to watching them, looking out for every pirate maps warning of "That be beasties here!" 😊

I have an affinity with rivers, so I particularly enjoyed this poem of farewell to a particular spot that means so much to you. Your lines flow beautifully and are very poetic in composition. Farewells are not goodbyes forever, so I feel you will return after your travels. I picked up some wonderful sunset imagery from your first stanza. Very much enjoyed. All good wishes.

The speaker here seems concerned with departures and endings. It appears he is on some kind of journey which he has yet to complete. The second verse may indicate a woman is involved, so perhaps what we are seeing is the end scene of a romance, with the speaker willing to regard the whole thing as a lesson.
