Volt lay in her cot, her eyes closed her mind awake. Anger pulsed through her veins, anger and a sense of betrayal. Dare thought he was being quiet, thought he was being considerate by not waking her but no he was hurting her by going to Darius instead of her, trusting him with his troubles instead of her. Suddenly Dare’s voice began to rise, his thoughts of being quiet and considerate gone. He was in distress, and then suddenly he stopped talking entirely as if he was pushed into a deep sleep.
An eerie silence fell on the room, a silence coated in something, something dangerous. Volt shut her eyes tight, not daring to move, hardly breathing, waiting feverishly, for it to pass. A cool hand pressed against her face, and a voice whispered in her ear. An old, strong and steady voice.
“They remember nothing.”
Volt closed her eyes tighter, refusing to speak, even though the intruder was fully aware that she was awake.
“Very well, remain silent.”
And then the voice was gone, the feeling of danger passing leaving another feeling behind. A feeling of tiredness. She opened her eyes and inhaled sharply, clinging to the covers on her bed a single tear trickling out of her eye.
