Wings

Wings

A Poem by Lydia Thacker

My tired dreamy eyes close
but sleep refuses to come.

Too many
ideas race.

Thoughts, once hidden, breach the surface,
popping above the tranquil waters of my vision
before I can restrain them.

Hope shimmers on the horizon,
lighting my straying thought
with its sunset glow.

Dare I dream?
Dare I give voice
to what my vision shows?

My mouth opens,
but only song pours forth.

Hope, you are my bird;
carry me above the haze of dreams
to your lofty nesting place
else give me wings with which to fly.

I love this for two reasons: One, it perfectly described the exact I feeling on some nights when trying to go to sleep. Sometimes it just doesn't come at all because of all the things swimming around in my head. Very frustrating. Two, I love how--especially in the end--it made me think my favorite poem by my favorite poet, Emily Dickinson:

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune--without the words,
And never stops at all

That poem inspires me to write, and has meant a lot to me in my life.

I love your poem. The imagery is wonderful. Favoring. :)
