A Cleansing Rain

A Cleansing Rain

A Poem by Lydia Thacker

Darkness looms and
shadows grow long.
The moon hides behind
a thick veil of clouds,
the sky pregnant
with the promise of rain.

Lightning arcs
in a blinding flash
and the heavens roar
as heavy tears dampen
not only the streets,
but my pillow.

The trees bow their thanks
while my body curls up,
waiting for the peace
which follows such
an intense purification.

The storm breaks
and the moon emerges
before sleep finds me.
I wake with sore eyes,
but with peace
in my soul,
to a world made fresh.

I sense hope
where before
I saw only despair.

Mayhap today
my heart will sing.
