Tyranny of MightA Poem by Opeyemi Jide-OjoFuture’s this, Fate, clasping her fingers tight around time’s neck, Choking life
out of what we all understand to be the normal scheme of things- We have passed this way before We know what we saw: This is the way The normal scheme of things
And for all
the grand hoots of bravado and rowdiness, Time
strutting his brackets like peacock’s feathers We enveloped
ourselves in delusions of speed and knowledge, Refusing to
accept truth when it was offered us- We have passed this way before We know what we saw: This is the way The normal scheme of things
Regal in
nothingness and let your pride roam free The words
rang in our ears from the first day, From the
first morning; then was the dew of our youth Burned deep
like a cattle’s brand, Unmistakable Etched into
our minds like a god’s engraving Your face is ever before me, Yes! I have you in the lines of my
palms Such were
the words should we ever forget That was a
luxury; to forget was a luxury So we could
not accept when it was said to remember not, To stop the
former things and look for new ones, New schemes, We have passed this way before We know what we saw: This is the way The normal scheme of things
Look into
our eyes, We had the
stars painted into our eyes We were ever
expanding with the never-ending universe, The gods
bathed their children in our eyes, Our rivers
full of life, And
knowledge, And peace: And all that we saw was peace We could
never leave this ever expanding universe, Time without
borders, Existence
without end Even when the
alarm was sounded, The noise of
war and piercing screams banging on our drums, We could not We have passed this way before We know what we saw: This is the way: The normal scheme of things
For
knowledge of the times will be your greatest strength, And your
swords forged in the deep forges of eternal wisdom Your feet
shod in stone and iron, Your heart made with speaking earth Truth for
your brother in arms And all the
land will be free again The tyranny
of might finally quelled One after one a sword went through
our necks
We have passed this way before
We know what
we saw
This is the
way
