Sense and Insensibilities

Sense and Insensibilities

A Poem by Opeyemi Jide-Ojo

For unburied occurrences, fatal flaws and mistaken judgements,

Scars that run deep behind open wounds-

Traveller, wanderlust- itchy feet-

And voices which have refused to heal:

Such is the nature of all who passed this way,

They went far as their feet could carry them;

No more.

Birth, mirth and tombstones,

Waving asp like dried reeds in arid gardens,

Poisoned kiss- hearts gripping in joy morbid,

The traveller and his companion,

Till his heel was struck by that which never recovered afterwards:

Such is the nature of all who passed this way,

They went far as their feet could carry them;

No more.

Open up to the surrounding void,

Spaces that eat inwards to the innards,

Spewing guts- intuition, and reliable wisdom

Honest tear, breaking pieces- ripping pages,

Chapters wrapping up in drying ink,

Seal crest; the family heirloom is forgotten-

He was hunted spirited away in his sleep,

Travelled up north; itchy sleeping feet:

Such is the nature of all who passed this way,

They went far as their feet could carry them;

No more.

Whatever he does, he blossoms,

The traveller sang along the first song carried to him

From afar- songs of streams, chairs and dust-

And momentarily he wandered off in a daydream

Thinking ever so fondly of his rocking chair-

They had both seen many days,

Many rains and many evenings-

Till a knife pierce your deepest soul,

Silence eludes you for many morrows.

Travel far, travel sore,

Travel till roads be no more;

Travel long, travel long,

Travel till roads be no more:

Such is the nature of all who passed this way,

They went far as their feet could carry them;

Till they travelled no more.
