Twenty-third Hope

Twenty-third Hope

A Poem by Opeyemi Jide-Ojo

Do we believe in stars?

For we have good reason to,

As one wakes up at the crack of dawn- or well before dawn,

The one time waited much for, and indeed we,

For we waited and watched with time as it counted slowly,

Then quickly, until the one time waited much for arrived with it.

From a corner in the skies above our heads something twists,

Or perhaps from a corner in the voices in our heads something speaks,

Voice of time wrapped into melody never heard-

We are bound by its spell; quiet songs that ring loudly in our ears,

Our hearts reverberate with its rhythm

And we can almost see it smile.

Then we know we are of much hope,

For our hopes are given to us by that so dear,

Precious bits of time sewn into us to ever remember,

And in these bits our lives should start,

Hope for many tomorrows to come.

Time indeed speaks yet again-

We listen, our hearts wild with glee.
