Bright Shiny Things

Bright Shiny Things

A Poem by April Child
"

A walk on the beach....

"

I walk on the beach

picking up stones.

My coat gets heavier

as I pocket them but
like a magpie drawn to

bright shiny things

I am compelled to collect

until  the lining of my jacket

feels like it will rip and

their weight makes me want

to  slip it off, step over and

leave it right there on the ground.

I could just stop, admire them

and  set them back down for
someone else to enjoy.

Its not like they are
going to run out..

Even beautiful things
weigh you down.

Perhaps I should

practise the art of

letting go...

"The art letting go" is an awesome statement, or what should I say...umm a nice pictorial release! or...umm ok let it go! It is simply wonderful. Not that we don't know this. But we forget this basic thing in our day-to-day activity. Thanks for this endeavor to remind this.

Your poem has a subtle feeling which is why I like it a lot. This may be prehaps after a long gap I am in this site. And your poem is the very first entry I read. Really, you've made my day. Keep it up!

Thanks.

Yup, I have a hard time getting rid of completely useless and otherwise unnecessary things if they mean something ie. have sentimental value or are beautiful. You caught that perfectly.

Imaginative, and enlightened. The idea of collecting beautiful things and not being able to let them go opens the door wide to so much of our behavior... A well crafted poem, that gives us more than a few things to consider.

Even too much of a good thing can be bad for you... but you also make a great point in that we need to remember we are not the only one on this Earth and we need to not be greedy when it comes to Earth's resources.
