Ancient Parchment

Ancient Parchment

A Poem by April Child

Something un-discernable

just beyond my mind’s eye

a feeling I can’t quite place

meanders, ethereal as

early morning mist

swirling through woods

delicate as ink on

ancient parchment

written with reed

by a chinese monk

beautiful in the way

only sadness

can be

' beautiful in the way - - only sadness - can be '

How true is that, how transparent the way it etches 'forever' into the skin and thus the heart.

What a lovely poem, is more than real, not a touch of artifice or whatever.. is a sigh to hold close.

A sigh to hold close, your review is a poem in itself. Lovely, thank you :)

(beautiful in the way only sadness can be) Yes indeed....I know this is a truth that many have not yet learned. Perhaps they never will. Your words have captured me. ~Sharon

It seems, at least to me, that the most real and powerful feelings seem to be those which lurk just out of our understanding: melancholia, lugubrious, ennui... no matter how precisely you try to express it, it feels inadequate. Once we attribute a firm word, trying to harrow an impression to an emotion, what we feel seems to lose something. Perhaps that is why poetry has the power it does, attempting to guide rather than define such facets of the hearts we ourselves do not understand--those things which envelope their beauty in their own impermanence. I certainly appreciated this one, especially the imagery, and the way you weaved metaphors in their own passing way.
