An Unexpected Awakening

Chapter 1 of "A Line in the Sand."

"

A dream where everything is fast moving. Arrows flying though the air, whistling past her ears. Swords clanging, causing vibrations from the sudden hits. This is what she wanted in her life. Not some drama crap about a girlfriend cheating on her boy toys. That is not what Rowan Heldson wanted. She wanted, no, needed a purpose in life. The high school style was just not for her.

Rowan Heldson was 17, a junior at Saint Mary's Academy. Sounds like your average stick-up-the-a*s school, which it was. Rowan wasn't an average girl. She had long flowing blonde hair, that looked as though it was a river of wheat, just flowing through time. Her eyes were as green as the evergreen forests that surrounded the little town of Everwood. She wasn't short like most of the other girls, at a height of 5'10", which would be staggering for most others in that peaceful town. Indeed, Rowan was just one of those girls that didn't seem to fit in. Always, Rowan's mother would poke fun at her, telling her daughter that she was born in the wrong time. Rowan actually believed it. She would always answer her mother, "I was born in the wrong time... the sands of time fucked up." she would say, and then get scolded for such foul language. Being in the world of the 21st century was very difficult, and Rowan knew it wasn't for her.

With a lot of dificulty, and unwanting, Rowan awoke from her perfect dream and sat up slowly in bed. She rubbed her eyes, and couldn't see a thing, for she always had low blood pressure in the morning. Not only that, but everything was dark in her room. She stood up, and heard clashing and banging about. Either her mother was trying to cook again, or she had left the T.V. on. Ever so slowly, Rowan got up and walked about the house. Things felt off to her, and she couldn't quite place how. There was nothing on. No lights, no computers, and no T.Vs. This confused Rowan, and left no explaination to the noises she was still hearing. Slowly, she started to come to her sences, and shook the sleep from her head.

"What is going on around here... did mom forget to pay the bill again...?" she muttered under her breath to herself in annoyance. It was supposed to be a Saturday, so Rowan got changed into something more comfortable than her weekly school uniform. She got changed into a snug pair of black jeans that had a chain for her wallet that was in her back pocket. The top she wore was a simple white tank top with a black sports bra over her white push-up bra. Her shoes and socks were just a pair of black Vans and white ankle socks, though you couldn't even see them. Her figure was curvacious, and in well fit order. That, however, was due to her taking martial arts as a young girl, and it was something she still practiced to that day.

Rowan walked to the huge bay window that was in her livingroom to see if her mom's car was in the driveway. What she saw was something she never expected. A war was going on right in her front yard, but at the same time, it wasn't even her front yard. Her front yard was usually covered in beautiful evergreen trees, and her driveway went for about a half a mile before it hit the mainroad. This place was barren, like an open field. It was something that startled Rowan. She was amazed at how these, things were fighting as if they didn't see the house at all. The things... their skin was bluish, sickly looking. Scars and burns covered their bodies, and most of them were bald. Their teeth looked as though they smoked a pack of cigarettes every hour. Their eyes were big and cat-like, and were a black in color. These creatures sent shivers of fear down Rowan's spine. The ones they were fighting looked like men, but their ears were long, looking more like elves, but not Santa's helpers. No, these elves were tall and long, obviously lean. Their armor was silver and navy blue. Their hair colors ranged from as light as silver streams to as black as the darkest night. Most of them were archerers, but some had swords and were cutting down the creatures as if they were merely twigs in their paths. Rowan was so entranced that her face was soon pressed against the glass. She soon noticed, however, that the creatures were the ones who were winning. Their black armor seemed to swarm over the navy and light blues like a sea of terror. It wasn't a T.V. she had been hearing, it was this. Quickly, Rowan ran to her basement and grabbed what martial art weapons she had, which was merely her bo-staff. A bo-staff to a sword fight... not a very smart move... Rowan thought to herself. She quickly ran up to her kitchen and armed herself with two long kitchen knives. They were her mother's favorites, made in Japan. The bo-staff she put in a special holder that could strap it to her back, and she ran out to aid the elves, but not before grabbing her lucky charm, which attached nicely to a loop in her jeans, and with that, she ran into the fight, coming up from behind the enemy.
