swansong

A Poem by Vincent
"

this is an epic, but it's still a work in progress. the plot of it is loosely based on the movie 300.

"

as moon sank and sun rose in foreign land,
a kingdom distant feasted upon present
victory, and scores of footmen in warlike band
trudged along foreign bank, treading sand, recruiting
serf, common, noble, and peasant.

on that previous morn, men conversed with armor adorned
in village and plaza, pulling on to fall in for glorious march.
young men, freshly born, tagged along despite woman scorned
with glee of pillage, to lay siege and empire to stifle and parch.
"onward, ho! across poseidon's cavern we shall row!"

erelong mothers, lovers, and women beseech
the absence of brethren, children, men, and politician;
man's fate in mortal combat lies just from their reach,
as one's true life lies just beyond the scope of premonition.

giant monoliths police the sea, with masts full cast
in sail of the highest tide; as centurion fleet leads
on at head, brothers in arms walk on in triumphant pride,
tending to their head, and checking of fellow ship at side.

alas, the victims yet not know of foreign soldier
coming by poseidon's pronged three, with sentiment
none to agree, coming forth as slaveholder
to force thee to serve without commanding commitment.

but on thrice fortnight before, as king traveled on,
atop the alter his sacrifice wore, as he pleaded
to his eternal saviors for the blessings of protection gone.
he asked not for tragedy repeated, only to wish
the safety needed of his family and people won.

his great empire was most decorated with militant stride,
most ornated with visage of service and superior glide.

as he reached the crest of the greatest cliff,
a palatial cove stood nobly at the deadliest summit.
for a vailiant fortnight he strode on to take atrocity with,
only to arrive to pyre and ritual aflame, well lit.
