Sonnet 619 - Thursday 15 May 2008
Been reading poetry, because I’m not
An expert in this field of literature
Or any field or meadow, come to that
I just express myself, simple and clear
If ordinary people have ears to hear
Then poetry can reach them, do its work
But if it’s too clever it can be mere
Elitism, pretentiousness; can shirk
Its duty to communicate; can lurk
In rarefied communities, a plot
Inhabited by haves, not have nots. You’re
Sure to want it to reach ordinary folk
Aren’t you? It’s not rocket science. The thought
Process of poets shouldn’t cause us fear
