It made think the narrator is a woman from the 1920s in a red dress and diamond ear rings who has finally been courted by a wealthy mobster

You're actually spot on more or less, It is was inspired by women standing up against men (except I didn't go into as much detail about the narrator when I thought of her). After I wrote It though I notice more ways that the narrator could be interpreted to be.
