DistanceA Poem by King of the North (but only on weekdays)A sappy poem for some b***h who makes me smile (it's not sexism if she takes joy in being called one)Listen to the sound her breath makes as she slumbers Is she calm? Does she worry? Perhaps both, perhaps neither Does she think of you fondly, drifting further and further? Both losing ourselves in pillows of thought Are you happy? Am I? Is this both what we want? The silliness The soppiness And those late night chats Rare moments of seriousness Punctuated only by the laughter that follows Make me think of your eyes How you shine like moonlight sparkling And though I lie here in darkness Wide awake, my eyes are open And so I think of you Holding you Feeling you Stroking your hair But I don’t Cause I can’t So I continue to listen... All these things that I say are but thoughts in my mind And your head, though amazing Lies on a pillow, far away And yet, I can hear you You breathing’s nearly snoring You’re not quite asleep But you’re not quite awake I thought of hanging up, calling it a night “Keep talking. I like it. Talk me to sleep” And so I do I keep talking Deep into the AM I talked nothing but rubbish Nonsensical bollocks But only for you Cause you told me “Keep going” And my mind was at ease My voice made you happy Your voice kept me sane And now I hear you sleeping down the telephone line I smile a wry smile I’m happy you’re resting But I dare not say a word I’d hate to wake you up And so once again I’m listening... My mind begins to wonder How different life would be How happy, mad or crazy Were you right here beside me Head resting on my chest But finally I say goodnight So as the line goes dead, I mutter... Long distance is a b***h
