![]() Through the Lake GlassA Chapter by AriaChapter Two When she was a far enough, she called out to her knight. “Wait! Please wait!” It was no matter though. The flashing, burning diamond was becoming further and further away from the girl. When she tripped over some tree roots and fell to her hands and knees, the little lady realized she had left with no shoes. And now, her magnificent gown was torn at the hem and stained from the grass. But, in her newfound position she discovered a quaint trail that would lead her straight to the White Light Knight. His blood. “I’ll find you yet, sir.” With a smile and a limp, the young lady of Cheshire followed the trail the foolish little man was leaving in his wake. “Just like hunting rabbits. You, my little white rabbit, are no different.” A giggle echoed in the dark woods. Though she knew her fleet was already out in search of her, she knew they would not get to her before she got to her prey. And if the prey turns out to be a hunter, help would be only minutes away for our curious cat. Just then, as a swarm of Empire Butterflies flew past, the flash of light seemed to shine its brightest on the far side edge of the lake. “Fool.” Our sweet girl thought to herself. “This is my world. My lands. You can’t hide.” With confidence no one her age should behold, her feet gracefully reached the edge of the broadleaf trees that were kissing the edge of the lake. But as the moonlight glistened on the dark water and the treasure in the velvet sky seemed to sparkle in defiance, her feet stopped. “What? What is this?” She whispered, barely hearing her scared little questions. There, on the tiny stones on the lakes’ edge, lay the fallen diamond of the sky. The kings’ jewel. She searched frantically for the White Light Knight but saw no sign of her prey. After a few much needed breaths, she spoke. “Come out, come out wherever you are! I know you’re here, dear sir. Face me!” She stood inches from the diamond but saw no one nor heard any vibration in the air. Not wanting to waste more time, the she snatched the apple-sized diamond in her hands as gently as she could. “My lady!” Said a voice. “Little miss, where are you?!” Said her mother’s voice. Her mother’s terrified and tired voice. “Mother.” She responded with joy. “Mother I’m here!” Little miss shouted and Jaenah knew precisely where her daughter was awaiting her. But then, there was a splash. So loud it could not be dismissed as a fish and so near that she knew, just knew that it was the White Light Knight. Her body whisked around only to see the aftermath in the water the stranger left behind. “You, sir, are desperately trying my patience.” His tone from before had not eluded her. She knew the man was afraid but his behavior was not that of a gentleman and so the lady was not amused and thought him disagreeable. She kneeled onto the stone and leaned to the water to see if she could find a glance of him. Perhaps he was drowning, she fretted. “Sir?” Her face scrunched and she clutched the diamond close to her heart. Too close it would seem for she pricked her chest and spilled drops of fresh crimson blood onto the soft gray stones. “Ouch!” She could hear her mothers’ footsteps nearing, only moments away but she also heard another splash and the water nearly drenched her. “How dare you? You little scoundrel!” In her shock, she pricked her hand but didn’t pay it any thought. Her only thought now was to find the annoying little white rabbit and cook it for dinner. “Where are you?” She leaned forward once more, piercing her arm into the cool water to feel for him. And then, she certainly felt him. His hand grasped hers and pulled her into the lake. Jaenah rushed through the trees with a joyous smile and trembling heart. But they faded the moment she saw emptiness filling the lake. Her daughter was gone and nothing but the light of the moon blanketed the waters’ surface. If the lady Jaenah only knew that the bright gleaming light on the water was coming from beneath it. Then, then perhaps she would have reached her daughter and saved her from what was to come. “Go. Find her! Search everywhere! No one sleeps tonight!” © 2010 Aria |
