Artistic WhimsiesA Poem by Austin SmithNot only the work of art, but the work IN art.Artistic Whimsies To see the face of one so willing, And the work of their own hands, Is to see a child instilling The little of which it understands. A painting made with hands and heart Must also have their eyes and feet To stand the agony of the start, And witness time’s unspoken defeat. A novel, story, or a poem no less Is artwork to both eyes and ears. Authors use the tools to address Their lives and passions, fears crystal
clear. A pluck, a strike; a bow and a reed Deliver to the ears sweet music That inhibits within us a ‘natural need To hear the message; limb control . . .
lose it. To taste the nectar that is “inspire” Is to battle time and to battle wits. Yet the spoils of that battle spread
like wildfire, And change comes to history as the child
submits. © 2010 Austin SmithAuthor's Note
