Lace and PearlsA Poem by Annie AleI sat looking out of the large window In my silk, milky dress, Adorned with lace and pearls Waiting for him to come home. I waited for hours and days, But the only man that ever came Was in a blue coat and on a black horse. He said he had already come home And he did too soon. I was angry that he'd left me With her still in the womb. Barely had our life together, Which also ended very soon. She looked more like him Day by day, And even hour by hour. Eventually, She sat by my bedside, In tears and pain, Not wanting me to go home. I said to her that her husband is waiting And her children are waiting For her to get home. I said I'd been waiting to go home For so many years. And so I sat waiting by the window, the large one by the door, In my silk, milky dress, Adorned in lace and pearls; My time had come for that to end here. I closed my eyes One last time. I waited by the large window, As he rode up on his white horse, Carried me over the threshold, And away we went To our home. © 2013 Annie Ale |
