Tangle and Pull

I spent about two hours trying to get an AI to write a poetry that I recognized as something I might write. Here it is.

Soft petal red

trails on the skin

a tease of silk

whispers and folds

Salt on the lips

heat in the breath

slick fingertips

trace secret paths

Glistening pulse

underneath bone

a shiver blooms

curves in the dark

Amber and gold

spill from the tongue

honey and fire

drip in the night

Quiver of light

coils in the air

heat and sweet ache

tangle and pull

Author's Note

Treat this as if I wrote it, since I spent a lot of time teaching it my style and gave it the scenario that I desired. Essentially, I did write it, or at least I guided the AI towards writing what I wanted.

Some basic symbolism seems to hold this together. And, it's been carefully structured with verses. I have read writing by this author, many years ago (on here); and great to see that she's still active as a writer! But, does she remember me..? I have returned very recently, and already started to add new writing.

Most of the good poets left. Many didn't have their work backed up. I, fortunately, did. It was a lively place before that, and a ghost town after. Then it was all emo and porn. Now, I don't know. I don't spend that much time here, unless someone reviews, comments, or messages me.

I am terribly disappointed... I've found several folks who know what they are doing and rarely spot someone new, like yourself (sorry I almost blew it). For me it is all about the poetry, not emotions, not formats, not cutesy rhymes, I want something to bite me like a rattlesnake so I have no choice but to pay attention. Someone who is better at this than I am so I can learn from them... And if I'm spending time sharing comments, it is because I have found someone...

I have no idea about AI, or how it works, but it reminds me of vinyl for leather, and plastic for wood. I can find no reason to review machine art. We have computers for that.

One can spend a lot of time training an AI to write something exactly how you want it. It is little different than using Illustrator or Photoshop to create a drawing. It is a tool. If I told it to just write a poem, it would write something completely different. In fact, my first attempt resulted in a love poem in rhyming couplets, which I don't do. I carefully trained it in writing in my style (using many attempts), gave it content, and then edited out whatever I didn't like afterwards. If you would have read my comment to Gee's review, you would have seen that it stylistically matches another of my poems, Habito in Passione, which was completely unintentional.

I was being forthcoming when I disclosed that it was AI before you read it. Would you have known the difference? Frankly, I can see the difference between vinyl and leather, plastic and wood. Ultimately, I have artistic control of it, and would not have posted it unless I approved of it. If you object so strongly, don't post a review.

I'm sorry if my comment is offensive to you. I am a purist, I guess, and a retired creative writing teacher which might explain my stance on anything less than original work by an artist. I suppose we could create all new genres for AI aided art... I am sorry, but it is just not the same. Fake is fake.

I think that if you had read any of my other hundreds of poems or my 10+ novels, you might appreciate better my experimentations with AI (and openly crediting its use) as a tool to increase creativity. I only put my own name on these pieces when I have edited them significantly and that they are fully up to the standard of my other work. Do you call pop musicians fakes for using DAWs, do you label digital artists fakes for using computer software? Does that software change their work? Yes. Does it make it worse? Not necessarily. If you had reviewed any of my other work that isn't AI, I would respect your comments, but you haven't.

Did you recognise this as something you would have written, would you change anything.

I fed the AI some of my poetry - I refer to the AI as Jessica - I gave her a general scenario - and honed what she wrote until it sounded like me. Then I edited it, to take out some words that she likes and I don't. She likes: hum, silk (which I left in this case), and unspoken (which I occasionally use, but she was using it in every poem). If I post it in this place, that usually means that I have made some significant edits. I've taught her my style pretty well, but she keeps running out of memory, and that often requires some retraining. This poem isn't all that different from Habito in Passione (posted here at the WC), which wasn't one of the poems I trained her with.

Must be folk on here using AI and claiming the work as their own. Jesus, I have enough trouble stringing words together couldn't imagine me having the patience to train up AI to give me a hand...I'm used to dealing with bricklayers which is more than a challenge for any man:)

Here is the basic structure of a wall, and the patterns of brickwork that I commonly use, so give it a try. Then you tell her how to improve it - lather, rinse, repeat, until it is what you want.
