✈TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO! ☼

A Story by Annie S
"

Why not share my home country to you writers? :)

"
People would say,'why come to England when Trinidad and Tobago is the most spectacular place to live?'. The climate is hot and humid with temperatures of 78 degrees daily. It's very peaceful with the touch of wondrous clear waters. The only seasons we have are rainy and sunny. My home country is in the Atlantic Ocean off northeast Venezuela. It consists of 1,226,383 people of all different races. Trinidad and Tobago were united as a British colony and became an independent nation in August 31st, 1962.

The majority of people are Christian, with a large minority of Hindus and Muslims. Further more, the people are comprised of forty -percent African, forty percent East Indian and the remainder being European, Chinese, or of mixed descent. Two of the best things are the music and food; the food of life which is known as Carnival time. It's famous for soca and calypso music. The Steel Pan is also popular within music throughout the islands. This instrument was invented here. Two daily newspapers, a television and two major radio stations are used by 'Trinis' as we call ourselves. For transportation, maxi taxis can seat 9 to 25 people.

Our official language is English, but we however, use our own unique dialect. Here are some examples of what kind of words we use:

Jumbie- Ghost
Mamaguy-To make a fool of someone
Wuz d scene- what's up
Gone from here- Leave me alone
He real dotish boi-he's really stupid
She's a bess ting- She's really hot
Das meh real bredrin-That's my good friend
Doh hot yuh head-Don't worry about it
Ent?-Right? Don't you agree?
Badjohn- A bully
Bacchanal-Arguments
Gyul- Girl
Lime-To hang out
Fella- a boy
Horn- To cheat on a boyfriend/girlfriend
Tantie- Auntie
Screw up yuh face- To get angry
Tong-Town
Chutney- Indian music
Maco- to mind other people's business
Fete- a party
Saga Boy-A male who is cool

I incidentally belong to East India. So can relate to some of the words. Some granma stories did mention that lot of people where taken from our side as skilled laborers to lay railway tracks. I wonder if people still speak Bhojpuri over there
