My days with an online digital agency

My days with an online digital agency

A Story by Anna Brian

Everybody loves to have an opportunity to work in a company where they can reach for their dreams. I, like others, too had a dream. My dream to become one of the best copywriter in online digital marketing can work for top class online digital agency.

I started as a junior copywriter in an online digital agency, what I found there was a memorable experience for me. I learned a lot about copy and how to write intriguing promotional material.

The routine was simple, yet very interesting. I used to reach office half an hour earlier than the usual time. Security and janitorial staff used to greet me at the gate. Then I got myself a cup of coffee to just get into the groove.

The first thing I used to do is to make a list of things I need to deliver at the end of that day. Usually, I got a lot of requests from the brand management department, but digital marketing department was also very fond of me, because I used to respond quickly to their needs. They need content to boost company’s website in organic search results.

My company was an online digital agency, dealing with modern day marketing tactics like Facebook apps, web apps, iPhone and Android apps and social media marketing. So, I need to generate a lot of content for company’s official Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts. At the same time, I used to write copy for the company’s website and was also writing posts for the company’s official blog. It was not easy, the pressure was on all the time and deadlines were always threatening.

Then came the request to develop content for infographics, that was the last straw on the camel back. Infographics were no doubt a wonderful, entertaining and engaging resource to promote your brand on the social media platforms. However, it is one of the most difficult and time consuming content I created during my tenure with that online digital agency.

I created several wonderful infographics and shared it on different social media platforms through my company’s official accounts. The response was overwhelming and my boss was really happy to see the number of likes, shares and retweets our posts were getting on the social media, but it was too much for me. The workload was becoming obscene with each passing day.

One day, I was so occupied with requests that I could not get time to prepare infographics, unfortunately the deadline to post an infographics was also on the verge. So, I prepared this (see below) in five minutes and sent it to my boss for a review.

The very next day, my boss asked me to come in and discuss the work load with me and took back a couple of tasks. When I asked the reason, he opened this file and compared it with the previous infographics I’ve created. He told me that he realized that the quality of the work is becoming a problem due to the work load and as an online digital agency, we cannot compromise the quality of the content we create.

That was a huge relief for me and that helped me to carry on my quality work. That day, I realized how important it is to create quality content after spending time over a concept. I also appreciate my boss’s wisdom that he analyzed the situation well and discovered the main reason behind it rather than rebuking me over a s**t piece of work. Since that day, I never took too much work and learned to say no. This helped me to maintain the quality of work and also improved my work-life balance.
