I knew.

I knew.

A Poem by Annabee90

I knew.
I knew in the way that you wake in the night in a cold sweat, knowing you had forgotten something from the day before, desperately searching the crevices of your mind, tearing down the walls you carefully constructed, clutching at straws.
I knew with the same ice cold feeling that slips down your throat and settles in the pit of your stomach,
I knew from the raised hairs on my arms and the shiver which slowly spread down my spine,
I knew in the way that you know you are being followed, without so much as a glance behind,
I knew from the song lyrics that jolted me back to a previous life, teasing my memory with the flat blade of a knife,
I knew because I recognized those little tell tale signs, the racing of my heartbeat, and the fear left in my eyes.
I knew though no one told me, their eyes said it all, I knew in the whistle of the wind that night, and the agonizing ring of the phone call.
I knew long before the phone even rang, I knew from the light in the sky, I knew from the flicker of the television set, and the way my mind kept demanding why.
I knew when I cut my finger, put it down to being tired, yet the sharp, salty sting, was a message, a warning shot being fired.
I knew when sleep would not come even after I closed my eyes, my body lay exhausted, yet my mind was fully wired.
I knew when the book I resorted to, seemed written entirely about me, I knew from the way the kettle spat out boiling water, when I crept downstairs to make tea.
I knew with unwelcome certainty that my worst fears were soon to be true,
and what makes it all the worse, is that I know you knew it too.

Very detail oriented, we all seem to get to this point of our lives in one way of another, enjoyed reading!

lua
this is so raw and painful, a subtle, almost willed denial of the known sorrow to come
