A Distressed Radio CallA Chapter by Anna Gruesome
The moment I was spotted with a fresh pot of coffee, I was mobbed by people wanting their caffeine fix. Not that any of them truly need it. They were hyped up on adrenaline and fear, they sure as hell didn't need caffeine. They were twitchy and jumpy enough already. But who was I to complain?
Not even five minutes later I was making a hasty retreat with an empty coffee pot and a promise to return with more. On my way back to the kitchen, I passed a small office that my father and his only deputy, Felix Benivides, had holed themselves up in for the past few hours. I could hear the sounds of other male voices besides my father's and Felix's. I couldn't make out the words, but by the harsh tones of their voices, I could tell the discussion was heated. Curiosity rearing its head, I crept up behind the door, cracking it open a sliver. I caught a glimpse of Felix sitting behind an old metal desk, fiddling with an old ham radio, my father standing behind him. The other three men crowded around the desk. The grim look on their faces made my hope falter a little. The radio let out a staticy squawk. "Shh," Felix hissed at the others. "Hello? Hello!," a terrified male voice cried over the radio. "Is there anybody there? Hello! W-we need h-h-help! Oh God! They're killing everyone! So much blood... P-p-please! Someone, we need help!" I covered my mouth with a hand to keep from making a sound. It was here. Whatever it was. A few weeks ago, several small villages deep in the Brazilian rainforest were discovered completely desecrated, the villagers brutally slaughtered and the homes burned to ashes. At first it was blamed on some dispute between neighboring villages, but the next few nights proved that theory wrong. The next morning a dozen small villages were found in the same manner. The morning after that, the number of desecrated villages doubled, then tripled, and so on. That's when the panic set in. The terrifying slaughters could simply not be explained. Not knowing what exactly was going on, governments world wide tried unsuccessfully to calm and reassure their people as they scrambled about blindly to figure out the reason and those responsible for the chain of mass slaughters. Not an answer could be found as it raged north into Mexico and farther towards the U.S. The border became overrun with terrified Mexicans as they fled to safety of the States. American and Canadian citizens alike were sent into a frenzy and were gallivanted into action. Europe and Asia quickly closed themselves off from the Americas, fearing the wild epidemic of murder and destruction. Whatever it was, the government couldn't stop it and it was determined to keep moving. "Jesus H. Christ," Mr. Chappa swore. "They've hit Laredo," Mr. Browning said, his voice rising in panic. "Quiet," Felix hissed. "P-please, someone, anyone, help us! Oh God, oh God! They're demons from hell!" Someone screamed in the background, followed by the retort of rapid gunfire, ending in another abrupt scream of agony. A sob came from the radio. "Please... They killed those soldiers like bugs. Nothing can stop them... so many." There was a loud crash in the background, ending with a terrified, high pitched scream. "Oh God, oh God! No, please... God help me-!" "Your God hears you not, pathetic human," a velvet smooth dark voice purred above the radio static. Another scream, this time punctuated by the sickeningly wet sound of bones snapping and flesh ripping. It finally did me in as the rest of the transmission was lost to static. A small scream escaped my lips. My eyes widened in horror as five sets of eyes focused on me from my spot behind the door. "S**t, Skyler," my father cursed as he bolted from behind the desk in my direction. My head was reeling. This was really happening. That person- he was dead. Demons he had said, demons from hell. Before I could collapse to the ground my father was there, taking me in his arms. "I got you baby, I got you," he said gruffly as he swung me up into his arms. He cradled me to his chest, crushing me close. I went limp in his arms as the tingly twinges that blurred my senses sharpen. "She's in shock Matt," I heard Felix say as his handsome face came into view. I saw black before I could say I was fine. © 2011 Anna Gruesome |
