The Church

The Church

A Chapter by Anna Gruesome

A wicked gust of wind rushed through the trees, causing their branches to slap angrily at the boarded up window. Outside it sounded more like a chorus of angry demons howling into the night rather than a strong gust of wind.
I sighed heavily as I filled the coffee pot again with water and new grounds. I flipped the switch and it instantly gurgled to life.
It was definitely going to be a long night, that was for sure. One small coffee pot and a church full of jumpy townsfolk afraid of their own shadows. Oh yeah. Long night.
I gingerly rubbed the back of my neck, expelling another sigh. If I would of had it my way, I would be at home right now watching the latest episode of True Blood.
But no, I was stuck here serving coffee and tea to more than half of the residents in Agua Dulce. Sometimes being the Constable's daughter was truly hell.
"How's that coffee comin' along baby?," my father asked, poking his head inside the small kitchen at the rear of the church.
"Fine," I replied without looking at him.
Let him know I was still mad about being here.
"Oh baby, it's just one night. Tomorrow we'll all be home, laughing about this, you'll see," my father said, running a hand through his salt and pepper hair.
I snorted, "This is still insane. Who says anything is going to happen? Here, to us? I understand why you have to be here, but me and Zach? No."
"I can't leave the two of you alone. And yes, I know you can take care of yourself and Zach, but what if something really does happen? Please baby, just-"
  "Just what?," I demanded.
"Just help me out here, I'm doing the best I can."
I sighed. "Fine, but I don't have to like it."
"No, you don't have to like it. And Skyler?"
  "What?"
  "Thanks."
"Your welcome," I growled as the coffee finished perking. I grabbed the pot and stomped off towards the door where my father still stood.
"I love you Skyler, your my baby girl," he said softly as he reached out and laid a heavy hand on my shoulder.
A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth.
  "I love you to daddy."
Seemingly satisfied, my father allowed his hand to drop to his side as he turned and followed me out.

Reviews

"boarded up window" - "boarded-up window"
"Outside it sounded more like a chorus of angry demons howling into the night rather than a strong gust of wind" - delete "more" or delete "rather"
comma after "flipped the switch"
"If I would of had it my way" - "If I would've" (or "would have") - although "could have" sounds better
Titles of television shows should be italicized.
"the Constable's daughter" - don't capitalize "constable's"
comma after "comin' along"
no comma after the question mark
"Oh baby" - comma after "Oh"
"his salt and pepper hair" - "his salt-and-pepper hair"
period, not comma, after "I snorted"
no comma after the question mark following "Just what"
"Your welcome" - "You're"
""I love you Skyler, your my baby girl" - "I love you, Skyler. you're my baby girl"
"I love you to daddy" - "I love you, too, Daddy"

It's a really short chapter, and I would have liked to see more. The end makes the chapter feel as if the latter half has been cut off; like Skyler's conversation with her father is a pause between crisis and crisis. The beginning does a good job to set up some of the situation - crowded church, people afraid (only a small coffee pot to keep 'em all supplied with caffeine!), that sort of thing, but it doesn't give away too much, so there's a reason to read more and find out.
