Beneath the Crown

Beneath the Crown

A Poem by Ann Jose

Beneath the Crown

It hurts her ego to see them,
the prodigies and perfectionists out there
barely with any effort to live their lives
but still standing high and might

She knows deep down there is no point in blaming
for they too have crossed the sea
just to be where they are
and success follows their hard work

With late-night practices
Hours and days of hard work
Smiling and bearing their criticism
And constantly carrying the pressure
Just to go down the drain

Why is that she is still stuck in a pit
Down in a trench that knows no end
filled with pity and failures
No matter the effort she puts in,
Still down below the others

She too wishes to wear that crown one day,
the crown of success and accomplishment
Staying high and above
while bearing it with regret

Just to question
Is it worth it?
