How Long

How Long

A Poem by Erin Langley

Every time you tell me you love me, my mind asks "For how long?"

And every time you tell me I'm the one, I don't believe you.

Behind every smile in every picture is a silent question in my mind

How long will it take for you to grow tired of me

When will my moods finally take their toll

When will my long, pointless stories become annoying

When will my laugh become too loud, my jokes obnoxious

When will you stop saving random pictures of me just because

How long before you no longer stare at me and smile

When will the "I love you" texts end

You tell me I'm your forever but I know that's not true

Maybe I'm cynical, maybe I'm wrong

But once upon a time, a boy told me he loved me

And once upon a time, he told me he would always want me and never leave me

I was his everything

But somewhere along the way, he grew distant

My stories and jokes became annoying, my laugh too loud

He stopped saying I love you, stopped saying anything at all

When he left, he only left one thing behind

A question in my mind that would stay with me forever

Why wasn't I good enough for you

So maybe I've found my soulmate

Maybe I'll love you forever

But there's one thing I'm sure of

You won't love me forever
