Children of October

Children of October

A Poem by Anissa Ali
"

This is a poem I wrote for my creative poetry writing class. It is based on my favorite hockey player, Phil Kessel

"
Children of October-
You on the 2nd
And me on the 10th,
with only 11 years apart.
But I fell in love in
January when you
touched my hand.

It was cold from the ice
that made you famous, where
everyone knew your name, but
used it in vain.

A harmless joke of
phobia they say, but the only ones
laughing are the clowns with
human painted faces.

They put you down
because you are different
and not like them.

They put you down
because they know they
can never have the strength,
kindness, skill, and thick body
type that you possess. Qualities that
drew me to you.

Sticks and pucks and the
roars of the crowd
thundered across the arena as
you skated towards me.

I revealed my hand, but
you just stood there-
Staring at my hand.
I could hear my heartbeat
out of my chest as I waited
for your glove to graze
my hand.

And when it finally did,
my heart skipped-
a beat.

I had been a fan of
yours for so long, but this
moment changed everything.

You had become
my fixation,
my obsession,
my number 1 as I became
your number 1 fan.
