Notes in Rebellion

A Poem by Anisha Nagchaudhuri

Notes in Rebellion

I walked in between the notes of songs

Aching tunes sung with shaky breaths

In remembrance of good times and bad

Some notes quiver under suppression, the dirges of rebellion aching

The haunting melodies come to me in my dreams, leave me shivering in the throes of a fever the night refuses to break

And then they come again, this time resting a cool palm on my perspiring forehead, beckoning me to follow them, catch a fistful of the golden, penny notes

Drinking in the bittersweet silver trebles, and resting my head against the iron-clad staccato, matching its pounding to the erratic beats of the flutter of wings in my chest

I traipsed and tripped, stumbled clumsily, ungainly with two left feet as the chords struck the ground

A hail of crescendos, mellifluous discord
