My Response To Autism

Today on the
way to second period I was telling a friend that it is Autism Awareness day.
This day is special to me because I have Asperger’s. My friend said that he
never would have guessed and I was dreading what he would inevitably say next.
So, before he could say it I said “Please tell me you are not going to say you
didn’t know because I do not look or act Autistic.” He replied by saying that
is indeed the reason. That statement really hurts me but I do not think anybody
realizes it hurts Autistic people to say things like: “But you do not look or
act Autistic!” If you ask those people how does Autism look or act, the
majority of people will either apologize, back away silently, or both. Some people
will try to say they do not know what an Autistic person looks or acts or they
will say Autistic people look and act stupid or slow. Many will also say
Autistic people always need someone to take care of them and cannot do anything
by themselves. Most of the time when people say this, they are not speaking
from facts. They are going mostly, if not entirely, based on looking at an
Autistic person without getting to know them. In my opinion, it is very hard to
understand Autism and you cannot even begin to start understanding Autism or
Autistic people without getting to know one. So when someone starts judging and
making accusations of us; I hope they know that it really hurts us emotionally
and mentally.
