Chapter 1

The sun shined brightly into the kennel as the small pup opened her eyes. Another day in the pound, the usual. It wasn't grand here, but it was nice having friends and people who came to see you, but today would be different.

The German Shepherd pup's ears perked up at the sound of a man, a new one. He walked over to her cage, giving a wide smile. The enthusiastic pup, stood up, eagerly placing her paws on the cage. The man turned to the woman, the owner of the kennel, pointing to the pup, “I'll take this one,” he said, his voice ringing happiness. He handed the woman money as she handed him the key to her kennel. He slowly opened the door, quickly grabbing the pup's scruff and putting a black collar around her neck.

The pup didn't like how roughly he grabbed her, but she was happy to be leaving this place. She glanced around at the kennels beside her, the dogs shaking their heads. Something was wrong. The man leashed her, but the pup stayed still. He tugged on the leash, no movement from the pup, “Move d****t!” he growled, tugging hard enough to choke her. The pup moved forward, not wanting to get choked by the leash as the man led her out, she took one last glance at her friends.

The man abruptly pushed her into the back seat of the pickup truck, slamming the door. The pup stared out the window, watching as the pound slowly faded away in the distance. She gave a whimper, pacing the seat. She jumped as the man yelled at her to knock it off. She stopped, lying down and giving a soft sigh. She slowly drifted into a small nap as the truck continued.
