Chapter 2: Caramel Frappe

I got scared during that first week of high school, I got really “known” due to the fact about the “incident” that happened between me and Evans. But hey! This is living the normal life, the life beyond the four walls of some room in the castle. The life I always wanted.

Chemistry was my first subject for today, I got a seat up front which didn’t surprise me ‘cause there were just the five of us sitting. Two on the middle, I sat on the farthest left with Laura and the other seated at the farthest right. There were a lot of new faces to the both of us. Which made me realize, prom’s coming up in a few months.

I was chattering with Laura when Ms. Woods came in everybody settled down. To my surprise everybody was at their seats but was still busy chattering with each other. Gosh! Where are the manners people?! If I could just shut the hell out of their non sense blabbering mouths I’d really do it. But, as I mentioned earlier I try to keep a low profile. The class ended and our teacher was about to leave the room. I could see the look on her face, she’s a bit disappointed.

“Ms. Woods?” She turned around and forced a smile.

“Yes Ms...?”

“Gomez.” I immediately answered.

“Ah. Yes, right!” I nodded and gave her a cheerful smile.

“Do you have any questions or need any help?” she asked me.

“Ah, yes Ma’am.” I took a quick glance behind me.

I slowly looked at Ms. Woods in the eyes ready to ask her. She forced a tight smile.

“You too huh?” Wait, what? Did she just read my mind?

“Well, I don’t have a choice. I can’t just shut up because one of the students here complained on how the teachers discipline them. That’s why we teachers aren’t allowed to interfere or shut the students up because they are just paying us.” Ms. Woods explained.

“Such a great school but moulds such rude students! What’s wrong with this picture?!” She flashed me one last smile and took out her book.

“Bring out your books and turn to page 77.” She starts off then writes on the board the summary of the notes.

“Class dismissed.” She shouts. The whole room disperses into thin air just like that. The five of us left last.

“Oh, don’t forget the unit test tomorrow you five, since you were the ones who just listened.” She smiles and leaves the room before we did.

She is one of my favorite teachers due to the fact I have been close to her since freshman years, she always tutors me on my Filipino teaching me the correct intonation and pronunciation of the words. That’s why it didn’t take me long to speak fluently. We would sometimes go to the café near the university, after class and just chat.

After class I went to this cute café near the university and ordered my favorite black forest frappe. I like going here alone or either with Laura or Ms. Woods. It has a vintage touch and a Paris themed interior, an ideal place to have a chat with friends or just to study. I come here so often that whenever I come in the door they would automatically fix my order so by the time I would reach the counter I’d just have to pay.

This afternoon I decided to go alone and do homework there. I got to top floor and sat on my favorite place, a couch beside the window. I decided to change my order for today; I got a caramel frappe and a slice of blueberry cheesecake.

I finished my home works and decided to spend my time finishing Delirium. What if love was actually a disease and that there would be a cure for you not to be infected by love, no heartbreaks, no sleepless nights crying yourself to sleep, and definitely no relationships. But there’s one thing, you’ll be one heartless human being. In short, you’re living the life of a robot in you. Well, it’s just fiction. Some random book I bout in the book store that for some reason caught my attention because of the title.

In the middle of turning a page I heard someone clear his throat. I turned to look a tall guy with brown messy but sexy in a good way curly hair and big brown eyes. I smiled as our eyes meet.

“I see you’re seating at my favorite place too...” He trails off.

“Well, hello to you too.” I answer that rather kind of came out a little rude.

“I’m sorry, I’m Jacob. Jacob Cross. May I seat with you?” He reaches out his hand and I gladly shake it.

“sure.” I fake a smile and tried not to make it look as fake as it can get.

“So, what are you reading?” He starts.

“Delirium by Lauren Oliver.” I answer and there was silence. He took out his iPad and went to the couch in front of me. Finally, some privacy.

Jacob

I saw her again. I noticed the change of order she’s made, caramel frappe I suppose. She probably doesn’t notice me, but I’ve been kind of stalking her for the past 2 years already. Rose Gomez. A simple girl with a simple life, that’s what I admire about her.

I first saw her here at the café during our freshman years. Back then she still had braces and wore the simplest shirt, jeans and sneakers you could ever imagine. I always made sure I was 5 meters away from her, and I would just sit there and observe her every move for a few more hours until she leaves.

No matter how simple she is, she just gives this light and ravishing aura that somehow lightens up my day. I loved looking at her from afar and draw candid sketches of her. But this time I decided I would go up to her and at least let her know my name. My heart pounded like crazy as I approached her.

“I see you’re seating at my favorite place too...” I start off. I know it’s not a good start of a conversation but at least.

“Well, hello to you too.” She answers. Ahh, the sweet sound of her angelic voice…

“I’m sorry, I’m Jacob. Jacob Cross. May I seat with you?” I nervously reach out my hand and she unexpectedly shakes it.

“sure.”

“So, what are you reading?” I start asking.

“Delirium by Lauren Oliver.” She answers. I know the title of the book, it’s the same book she’s read since the day I saw her enter this very café. It’s probably her favorite.

I have read it once, which made me think if she’s going through a bad break-up back then, then I started to notice 3 years of reading the trilogy over and over again. Probably love is everything to her. Something that isn’t freely given to someone that doesn’t have a special place in her heart. I wonder who might be that special guy is.

I took out my iPad and sat on the couch in front of her. I secretly took pictures of her. I love the way she would slouch down and rest her head on the window pane while she reads. Her naturally fare skin that glows and sparkles like she had glitter spread all over her when the sun touches her. She’s just perfect.

I am Jacob Cross, and I have found her.
