The Silent Heartbreak

The Silent Heartbreak

A Poem by Angelica H

I visited you today
Clearly things aren't the same
You were hidden and had nothing to say
While I talked to the stone that read your name

I play our favorite song
Hoping to still hear you sing
Sadly, you're done singing along
So I just reflect on the joy that used to bring

I see your retired wine glasses stored away
They remind me of the cheerful salutes 'round the table
And remind me of a time back in the day
When you were present, communicative, and stable

I still call your phone
Hoping you will answer
Still that same disconnected tone
Damn you, Cancer
----------------------
I visited you today
Still nothing to say-not a word
I sat by your name and prayed
And let the silence be heard

This really touched something within me having lost my brother to cancer aged only 23. I play his songs and talk to the picture on his stone. You described this beautifully and painted a picture. Well done

Wow. You never once mention death and yet the image of death and the feeling of loss is so clear and powerful.
