Wolf

Wolf

A Poem by ABitBrokenPoetry

You’re an assassin, an adversary, a ruthless beast
You’re the wolf knocking each night at my door
Seductively whispering “let me in”
But I don’t
And each day I dissolve into this crumbling house around me
I imagine, just once, of opening that door when you knock
wrapping my arms around you, as tight as I can
breathing you in, you smell of mountains and wind and trees
Of twisting my fingers through your long black hair
And gazing so deeply into your eyes the color of a tropical sea
Until salt water fills my lungs and I drown inside them
To capture the beast for just a moment
To keep him tame, and calm, and still
And then release him to the wild once more

But I don’t; It’s only a dream
And each whisper at my door will scar my heart a little more
until you give up and never knock again
It’s better this way
You would devour me whole.

Is the wolf at the door a person or some negative aspect of the speaker's mind? Either way, it seems there are mixed feelings regarding letting him in. I think the best course is to keep that door locked.
