PromiseA Story by AngelreadsTrudy lay in her hospital bed with her husband, Ben, standing over her. Trudy came down with her disease 3 months back. The sickness slowly ate at her brain and will continue until her time comes. Ben has been supportive, but as the days go by, she loses memory of who she is and eventually there will be nothing he can do. Even with the odds against him, he sits at her bedside every day holding her hand. Now Ben just sots and talks to her hoping she doesn't forget who he is. The doctor came in "Sir, I'm sorry to tell you, but your wife doesn't have much longer. You may want to say your goodbyes." Ben's face showed no reaction to the words the doctor spoke. He just kept holding her hand and smiling at her. Trudy awakes from her sleep startled, "Ah, who are you, why are you touching me, someone help!" Trudy quickly pulled away from Ben. Tears began to fill Ben's eyes," I'm the doctor. I was just checking your pulse, I'm sorry." Trudy relaxed and lay gently back down on her pillows. She knew she was dying and in some moments, she didn't feel like holding on. "I'm so sorry, doctor. I would blame it on my condition, but i think it's just my old age." Ben knew this day would come, but he just wished it wouldn't have come so fast. He had been married to her for 52 years and they promised to be together always, but it seems that promises don't last forever. Ben stood up and grabbed her hand, " Can i take you somewhere?" Ben had a plan to help her get her memory back. SHe had been stuck in that hospital for a month and she wasn't going to die in there too. "Well sure, doctor" Trudy got out of bed and wrapped her robe around herself. She had no idea where she was going, but for some reason her instincts told her to trust him. They walked for a long while from the hospital. They walked along empty land headed into the woods. "I know this place!" Trudy suddenly exclaimed. Ben gripped her hand," Do you know where we're going?' Trudy chuckled, " I know this pathway like the back of my hand." A steady smile swept over Ben's face. He knew taking her here would help, but he just hoped it was enough for her to remember him. "Can we sit down?" Trudy asked. Ben agreed and they sat on a log by the nearby river. "I remember that tree," Trudy pointed across from them," I know where we are now." She looked back at Ben and smiles," Ben, Ben honey is that you?" She leaned in to hug his oh so familiar chest. She sat down in between his legs and rested her head on his chest. They just lay there looking at the familiar tree," I'm getting old, Ben. I'm 75 and I'm not lasting much longer." Ben held her tightly,"Stop dont say that." He couldn't imagine a world without her and he didn't want to live it. "We used to come here didn't we?" Trudy looked up at him. "Yes this was our place. We would sneak away and come her. You wanted to be somewhere only we know." Trudy chuckled as her eyes started to close," Hmm somewhere only we know, doctor?" Ben began to weep and gently kissed her goodbye. © 2013 Angelreads |
