Because of you

We both know I'm not pretty
we both know I'm not smart
but I am still a person
and I, too, have a heart.
You laugh at your remarks
gloat with pride and glee
never stopping to think
how much you're hurting me.
Other people stare
now you've trashed my pride
with all their jeers and taunts
I may as well have died.
Running 'til I can no more
I stop to take a breath
when suddenly a car appears
with the face of death.
So let this be a lesson
consider all you do
or someone will come join me-
ALL BECAUSE OF YOU.

I really like the underlying message of this. I have two daughters who experience a lot of bullying in school and even though they're both really strong, it breaks my heart to know that someone else's callous words could make them feel like this. Great word choice and rhyme scheme.

Troubling poem...it is true that heartbreak can lead to desperation...but being mistreated should never cause one to give in to despair.
