Winterful Life

Winterful Life

A Poem by Aneto

God?
Where are you?
I'm feeling very lost
God?
Not to argue
But don't you feel the frost?

My energy sapped by the chilling cold
Freezingly wrapped, but with no hand to hold
Everything's peaceful, lifeless, and dead
Just keep pushing forward and plowing ahead?
Everything's white, covered in snow
Gone are the colors I used to know
Nothing to see, even animals hide
It's now only me, no friend by my side
And yet, You're here, I do believe
You promised You would never leave
But how prolonged is winter's death!
This unending season of ragged breath
God of resurrection, come!
Awaken us from cadaverous numb
Your breathe of life to light our eyes
With living dreams that bid us rise

"I want to live again," he said
The man who wished that he were dead
He found that it's a wonderful life
Loved by friends and kids and wife
He who stayed to faithfully keep
A pasture for a hundred sheep
Day by day while all along
The anchor-motor-whistle song
Mocked his hopes and dreams for more
While staying back to mind the store
Selfless, sacrificially
Plain uncommon decency
Until the weight of every loss
Was much too heavy of a cross
Burdened now unbearably
He wanders, lost, and cannot see
The good this life of pain has brought
Staggering unto the spot
Where lies and whispers shoot to kill
Their target locked, they fire at will
Yet when his life seems all in vain
The very urge that brings such pain
Becomes his own salvation when
He jumps to rescue once again

So open now my sullen eyes
To see in life how beauty lies
In serving others faithfully
Taking joy in others' glee
Finding gratitude for all
My many blessings, big and small
May I never quite give up
When drinking from this bitter cup
Help me see the joy ahead
And for that reason rise from bed
Give me strength to carry on
Through endless night to reach the dawn
 I'm tired, lonely, ill-at-ease
Warm my spirit lest I freeze
Hold my hand as now I plod
Sightless here, I trust you, God

Fine poetic expression in this piece. Turning to religion when all else is gone. Questioning the presence of God. By serving others, we can find a meaning to a life that appears empty, cold and lonely. I enjoyed my visit. Thank you.
