Who Are You?A Poem by Aneto
When first we met, I asked your name
A single word for who you are You first replied, then asked the same And just like that, our story starts But what do we gain from a name we know? We form our knowledge and memory And these we base upon their face To be recalled when them we see So in this way, a face appears To better last throughout the years And yet, we all can recognize Beyond what sight identifies A voice or laugh amidst a crowd And who they are is spoken loud But even without a face or voice We know someone by their items of choice A hat, coat, or shoes at the door And who's at home is a secret no more But surely, undoubtedly, who we are Is more than our face or our voice or our car For though I know your name and face And heard your voice within this place I haven't gone far in knowing who you are So what have you experienced in your past? What things in your present have been made to last? What hopes for the future stir deep in your heart? Exploring these things is a good place to start Then what are your thoughts, beliefs, and fears? What fills you with laughter? What brings you to tears? What feelings arise from each aspect of living? What true meaning lies in the words you are giving? The depths of who you are is more than I'll ever know But now that we've met, who knows how far we'll go!
