The Bucket ListA Poem by Andy East
Kristina just turned twenty one
Out with her mates having fun Nursing students sure know how to drink Til their brains are blurred unable to think The fun and the laughing Of what the future may bring The who fancies who Settle down, say 'I do' 'Not me!' Kristina shouts 'That ain't what I'm about' 'Gonna see the world, feel alive' 'Ride a camel, sky dive' 'I really wanna fly a plane' 'Does that sound too insane?' 'Making sure I fulfill each wish' 'Im writing up my bucket list' The night ends, they head on home Back to the dorm await the sun An early start for all but a few Go home, sleep, start anew Kristina says goodnight to her friends Wishing this night would never end A night with drinks, laughter and fun But now Kristina heads on home Time is called, he leaves the bar Fumbles his keys, gets in his car Driving along, he barely sees the road Through tired drunk eyes swerving to and fro He mounts the kerb, Kristina in his lights But doesn't see her with his eyes shut tight Head hits glass, crushing her brain Asleep at the wheel, unaware of his blame Surgeon operates through the night To save her life, they just might Finally resting in intensive care Friends and family gather to see her there She opens her eyes, out of danger Looks at family, like a stranger Smiles on faces, glad to see her She says one word, 'Kristina' 'Who's that Gran ?', 'Are you confused?' 'Do you remember, you're Grandma Sue?' An operation to replace her heart From a recent death with a donor card With health recovered, for Grandma Sue She plans her life, what she will do 'What will you do?, with your new heart' 'This donor has given you a fresh new start' 'Gonna see the world, feel alive' 'Ride a camel, sky dive' 'I really wanna fly a plane' 'Does that sound too insane?' 'Not wasting life, with this new start Gonna do the things in my heart Complete these things that I wish Gonna finish all my bucket list' © 2014 Andy East |
