Long Way Down

Long Way Down

A Poem by Andy Lewis
"

Addiction (a love story)

"
My last notes...
My last notes to a friend that was deep in sin
Along the way we got high.
Shutter now to think of the days.
The times that passed us by.

She was fair beyond compare.
And slightly just askew.
She held her pride with burning eyes.
A statement to our youth.

We did our lines and said our lies.
To quickly make it through.
A sober moment could pass us by.
Without making time seem true.

My soul ran cold the day she died.
Burning gracefully I said goodbye.
I turned and never looked again.
Towards the grave of lasting sin.

The years have passed and still I trace.
The tracks across my arms.
I think of her with ever breath.
So thankful that she's gone.

That girl of mine that sharpened knife.
That keeper of my tomb.
Took more of life than I had to give.
That needle and that spoon.
-the heart of addiction-

You've covered the same topic, except you did it in creative manner, which I admire. I took a more practical and straight forward approach, but then again, I had someone in mind to read it, so I didn't want to be cryptic. Anyway, sublime job. If I had to do it over, I would have taken a route similar to yours. A+

Think you forgot the "y" for every - "I think of her with ever breath."
Unless you meant it as like eternal, forevermore kind of thing.

Powerful words. Great piece.

Wow! The life of an addict is so sad to watch and even harder to go through, by the grace of God
I'm still breathing, PTL! This was well penned and I can certainly relate, thanks for sharing and b-blessed.
