DebrisA Poem by Andy CrawfordThis poem was about a girl who committed suicide on the train tracks in front of my house. I was woken in the early hours by a terrible scream thinking it was the sound was foxes fighting.Debris Porcelain bones and snow-white skin Left no words for next of kin Foxes sing a battle
cry Shivers climb her
fragile spine An arcade game with
one life left Hedgerows lead the
way ahead Each step holds a
bayonet That stabs her heart with hunger and regret A sound awakes me for
my sins A ghostly voice in howling winds Dazed by headlights
of a dream Of road kill spread
across concrete Look out through windows dressed in white To find a dark and empty night The sunrise longs to see the day But Winter’s here to stay Winter’s here to stay Winter’s here to stay She steps through snow and failing light Her stick-legs hold
her frame upright The danger signs are
not enough To silence words that
kick and push A broken mess of
tears and breath Performs a final
pirouette Like Shrapnel floats on stormy seas A freight train turns her body to debris Winter’s here to stay Winter’s here to stay © 2012 Andy CrawfordReviews
