Drunken Ways

Drunken Ways

A Poem by Andrew Nelson Stewart
"

The loneliness while in the background everything starts to fade and the feelings of elsewhere.

"

The killing days

   Take it strong

      While pain lingers,

         I ask for another

  Feelings drowning

I still feel the pain

sober or not.

Bearable nights will play hard to get,

as lonely nights prefer the cold ice

                                    Drifting among the dizziness

                This room is rainy.

         Always full and empty

somehow you can catch me in between.

Catching dreams pretending I’m asleep

resembles your eyes scanning the horizons

For new beginnings

My eyes crossing Madness was a new thing to do

Yet we still drink hoping

 wishes meet our expectations

thinking about times

fading away like colors of a recent fallen feather.

Letting some out has done nothing more than made my vision blurry

Scaling my emotions did nothing

I’m just trying to wake up

Many times drinking only blurs and amplifies the negative emotions. There aren’t bottles big enough to drown some hurts and sorrows . Only big enough to eventually kills us or our souls

Profound write that made me think deeply

We drink, either, because we enjoy drinking and its calming relaxing effects, or to drown out the static rumbling though our minds from those things, happenings, events, worries, troubles, etc. that we simply do not enjoy, and the booze becomes a liquid bandage that only holds and covers such negative wounds for a short time ... I enjoy a cold beer and sipping whiskey, because I like it ... However, especially since losing my wife this past January, there are times of recent when find myself reaching for that bandage, rather than the pleasantry of enjoying a drink ...

Considering that I am suffering the grief and mourning of losing my wife, your words are most real and truly poignant to me at this juncture in my elderly life ...

The above lines, I do understand. Drinking never fix anything. Just made my vision look at life with confused eyes. Outstanding poetry shared Andrew.

Wow, lots of great images to capture the pain of...whatever it might be, the need to escape it, and to somehow force reality to match our expectations. I'm beginning to sense that that's the ultimate tragedy of man.

This is a great, skillful poem with real substance.

Whatever vice propels us into another day (sometimes needed) comes with blessings and banes...I understand this piece and appreciate the rawness of it, such things should never be swept under the metaphorical rug but rather spoken loudly, to know you don't go through life's battles alone is sometimes enough as well...powerful piece Andrew...

I really enjoyed this, it hit home for me. I admire your will to keep going, regardless of the pain. I know struggle with this pain too, and more often than not find myself drinking just to soothe my mind to sleep. Its difficult, it's a rollercoaster of an experience, both good and bad moments that I can remember involved drinking. Nice work (:

Yes I tell myself this everyday. The show must go on!
This is quite an emotional piece of work you created! I enjoyed it a lot.
I can understand the constant urge to "drown" any pain/sorrow one must feel, yet have it never go away once the bottle is empty. It's a thing that gives us the liquid courage to let go and forget our thoughts/feelings of anything negative in our real lives...but when we get sober, it all comes crashing down at once and it's not an easy thing to deal with. I can relate to this struggle...magnificent job!
