Chapter Ten

Chapter Ten

A Chapter by Stan Lee

It had been a long day. Amber, Laura and Rocky had been brainstorming, trying their hardest to come up with a practical solution. Every idea had led them to a brick wall. They were all exhausted and dejected. Amber couldn't help crying as she lay in bed.

"Sorry that I suggested feeding him cement" Laura whispered.

"It's not that... It's everything."

"I know, but I'm still sorry. I shouldn't have made jokes."

Amber sobbed into her pillow. "Today was our last full day with Rocky and it's been awful."

Laura sat up in  her bed. "Amber, I think you should go out there now."

"What?"

"You normally wait til you think I'm asleep before you go out there but I think you should go now."

Amber looked at her sister with wide eyes. She opened her mouth to speak but then thinking better of it she left the room without a word.

Moving noiselessly through the halls and down to the hall she was completely unprepared for what she was about to see.

She peered through the dark shadows by the pool and a glint of silver caught her eye.

"ROCKY!!!!" she screamed.

A blade clattered to the ground. Rocky jumped, turned and ran in the opposite direction.

He reached the high brick fence that bordered the hotel. He spun then like a trapped animal.

"Go away Amber," he yelled as she ran towards him. "Just leave me alone."

Amber stopped, stunned in her tracks. She stared at him and his wild eyes for an eternity. "Rocky!" she breathed, "Oh Rocky, what have I done?"

His voice was quiet but bursting with anger that stemmed from despair. "I'm just a f*****g statue Amber. I can't even kill myself."

She didn't reply but started moving slowly to his side. He didn't run. "Why?"she asked, "why?.... don't you understand how much I love you?"

He gripped her shoulders roughly as if to shake her. "Don't YOU understand how much I love YOU?" he hissed. "Don't you understand that I don't want to live without you?"

"That's it then, I'm not going home. I don't want to live without you either."

His face softened, "But I don't want to be a burden to you either. And I  know I would be."

Amber was silent. It was true. Looking after Rocky would be a burden. "Love bears all" she whispered more to herself than to anyone then she hugged him gently. He hugged her too.

"I don't want to you to kill yourself."

"But I don't want to live without you."

"But I don't want to live without you either."

"But I don't want to be a burden to you."

"But I don't want you to kill yourself."

They almost started smiling at the futility of it all. That's when Amber noticed a warm sticky sensation on her skin. "Let's get that fixed up" she said gently.
